Our Curriculum

Intent

Our curriculum will give the children the opportunity to:

· Opening horizons and celebrating the rich diversity of every child.

· Develop their creativity through a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum where all subjects are valued.

· Develop strong foundations that create a culture of life long learners for each child to reach their full potential.

· Become part of our school and wider community and grow in a safe, happy and nurturing environment.

· Develop phonic skills through Little Wandle and have access to high quality texts to promote a love of reading.

· Engage in a creative curriculum that values Chichester as our local context.

· To be motivated by challenge through the enjoyment of learning.

· We foster character development, independence, collaboration and building resilience, teaching well-being and exploring strategies to support mental health.

Implementation

We deliver a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum that celebrates every child and opens their horizons through meaningful, diverse learning experiences. Creative opportunities are embedded across all subjects, which are carefully planned, sequenced and resourced to ensure strong foundations for lifelong learning. Children develop early reading skills through the consistent use of Little Wandle phonics and have daily access to high-quality texts to nurture a love of reading. To deliver a rich and engaging foundation curriculum, we use high-quality schemes including Kapow, Developing Experts and Purple Mash, ensuring consistency, progression and specialist subject knowledge across year groups. History is taught through our own carefully designed progression of skills documents, allowing us to sequence learning purposefully while maintaining strong links to key texts and our curriculum’s golden thread where appropriate.

Children also have frequent opportunities to explore their local community through visits to Chichester and its surrounding areas, including trips to places such as the library, the local college, farms and museums, enriching their learning with real-life experiences. Additionally, children benefit from a wide range of enrichment experiences, including visits from authors and illustrators, the emergency services, history specialists, parents and carers, and sporting professionals, and they absolutely love their Forest School sessions, which further deepen engagement and broaden their learning beyond the classroom.

We develop strong links with families, agencies and other professionals so that we can work together to carefully support children with additional needs through bespoke, tailored provision, ensuring their individual needs are fully met to the best of our endeavours. This collaborative approach enables pupils to develop the skills needed for greater independence alongside their peers, so that they can access and succeed within our curriculum.

Our curriculum values Chichester as our local context, using local history, geography and community links to make learning relevant and memorable. Wellbeing, character development, collaboration and independence are explicitly taught throughout school life, supported by a nurturing ethos that ensures all pupils feel safe, happy and able to succeed. Through challenge, high expectations and adaptive teaching, pupils are motivated to engage deeply, think creatively and reach their full potential within a supportive school and wider community.

Impact

As a result of our carefully designed and inclusive curriculum, children develop strong knowledge, skills and attitudes that prepare them for the next stage of their learning and for life beyond school. We aim for pupils to become confident, creative thinkers who can apply their understanding across subjects and in real-life contexts.

We aspire for all children to demonstrate positive learning behaviours, resilience and independence, showing pride in their achievements and a willingness to embrace challenge. Early reading is of the upmost importance, and we strive for children to become fluent, enthusiastic readers who engage widely with high-quality texts.

Our focus on wellbeing and character education enables pupils to have the opportunity to build healthy relationships, manage their emotions and contribute positively to their school and wider community. Ultimately, we are passionate that all children should leave us as well-rounded, motivated learners who understand their locality, value diversity and are equipped to reach their full potential.
