Design technology

At St Joseph’s, we believe that Design and Technology is a powerful way for children to explore their creativity and curiosity about the world around them. Through exciting hands-on projects, our pupils learn to design, make and evaluate their own creations, developing practical skills and imaginative thinking along the way.

We follow the Kapow Primary Design and Technology scheme, which helps children understand how products are made and encourages them to think like designers. From the earliest stages, children are supported to take risks, test ideas, and reflect on their work. They learn how to plan, model, and improve their designs, building confidence and resilience as they go.

Our curriculum is carefully structured to grow with the children. In Reception, we follow the EYFS Framework and Birth to 5 Matters, and as children move into Key Stage 1, we teach the National Curriculum with a clear progression of skills and knowledge. Each project follows a cycle of designing, making and evaluating, with real-life contexts that make learning meaningful and fun. Children are given the freedom to choose tools and materials, and they learn to talk about their work using the correct vocabulary.

Throughout their time with us, children explore a wide range of skills including sewing and textiles, cooking and nutrition, working with materials, and even simple electrical or mechanical components. These experiences help them understand how things work and how they can solve problems creatively.

By the time they leave St Joseph’s, our pupils are confident, curious learners who enjoy experimenting with ideas and asking questions. They know how to plan and communicate their designs clearly, and they have the skills to bring their ideas to life. Most importantly, they leave with a sense of pride in what they’ve made and an excitement for what they can create next.
