PSHE & RSHE
“Never apologise for being sensitive and emotional. Let this be a sign that you’ve got a big heart and aren’t afraid to let others see it. Showing your emotions is a sign of strength.”
— Brigitte Nicole
At St Joseph’s Infant School, we believe that personal wellbeing and emotional development are just as important as academic learning. As part of your child’s education, we teach a carefully planned programme of Personal Social Health and Economic (PSHE) Education that helps children build the knowledge understanding attitudes and practical skills they need to live healthy safe and fulfilled lives both now and in the future.
Our curriculum includes Relationships Sex and Health Education (RSHE) which has been updated in line with national guidance. This ensures that children learn about relationships and health in a way that is age-appropriate inclusive and relevant to their everyday lives. Our RSHE programme is a key part of our wider PSHE provision and we regularly review and adapt it to meet the needs of all our pupils.
We deliver the curriculum using a flexible and responsive approach that reflects the needs of our children and families. We use West Sussex E4S resources supported by the Kapow scheme to create a curriculum that is engaging and meaningful. Children explore themes such as health and wellbeing relationships and living in the wider world through interactive activities and thoughtful discussions.
Kapow Primary helps us give children the knowledge skills and attitudes they need to navigate life in the 21st century. The curriculum supports children in making informed choices about their health safety relationships and finances and encourages them to become confident individuals and active members of society. It also promotes the fundamental British values of democracy rule of law respect and tolerance and individual liberty.
The scheme is designed to grow with the children revisiting key areas each year so they can build on what they’ve learned. Lessons include topics such as family and relationships health and wellbeing safety and the changing body citizenship and economic wellbeing. Sex education is introduced in Year 6 at our Junior school in line with Department for Education recommendations.
At St Joseph’s we want every child to feel safe valued and prepared for the future. Through our PSHE and RSHE curriculum children develop resilience confidence and a strong sense of self. They learn how to manage friendships make healthy choices and know where to turn for help when they need it. This foundation of wellbeing supports them in becoming happy successful and compassionate members of society.
