PSHE & RSHE

Intent

At our Infant and Junior School, PSHE underpins everything we do. Across EYFS, KS1 and KS2, we aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as healthy, confident and responsible members of society. Our intention is to:

  • Provide a safe, inclusive and nurturing school culture where every child feels valued, listened to and supported.

  • Build pupils’ emotional literacy, resilience and confidence so that they can manage challenges and seek help when needed.

  • Teach children how to develop positive relationships, show empathy and treat others with respect.

  • Promote strong mental and physical health, helping children understand how to look after themselves and make informed choices.

  • Equip pupils with ageappropriate skills for staying safe, including online safety, personal safety, and recognising trusted adults.

  • Prepare children gradually for the wider world, including understanding diversity, equality, responsibility and economic awareness.

  • Ensure pupils with SEND, EAL and other additional needs can fully access and apply key PSHE concepts through a supportive, differentiated curriculum.

  • Provide a progressive curriculum from EYFS to Year 6, ensuring children revisit and deepen key concepts each year.

Our aim is for all children to grow into thoughtful, kind and resilient individuals ready for the next stage of their education and life beyond primary school.

Implementation

PSHE is taught through a carefully structured and sequenced wholeschool curriculum, aligned with statutory Relationships Education and Health Education guidance. Implementation includes:

1. Progressive, Weekly PSHE Lessons (EYFS–Year 6)

  • Regular, timetabled lessons following a spiral curriculum (Kapow).

  • Concepts are introduced in the Early Years, built on in KS1, and deepened in KS2.

  • Lessons include discussions, roleplay, stories, scenarios, collaborative activities and opportunities for reflection.

2. WholeSchool Themes and CrossCurricular Links

  • PSHE values are embedded across all subjects and school routines.

  • Assemblies focus on themes such as respect, perseverance, friendship, mental health and British values.

  • Emotional checkins, Zones of Regulation and positive behaviour strategies are part of daily classroom practice.

  • Safety and wellbeing content is integrated across PE, computing (online safety), science, and safeguarding procedures.

3. Inclusive and Differentiated Approaches

  • EYFS learning is delivered through play, stories, circle time and direct teaching.

  • KS1 and KS2 lessons use visual scaffolds, simplified language, sentence stems, social stories, or extended challenges depending on need.

  • Staff tailor questioning and support so all pupils, including SEND and EAL pupils, can engage meaningfully.

4. Behaviour, Relationships & School Values

  • A consistent whole school behaviour approach provides clear expectations and restorative practices.

  • Staff model kindness, respect and good communication.

  • Children are encouraged to solve conflicts fairly and develop responsible decisionmaking skills.

5. Safeguarding, Wellbeing & Wider Enrichment

  • PSHE supports the school’s safeguarding culture.

  • Lessons teach children how to recognise unsafe situations, understand consent at an ageappropriate level, and know who to talk to.

  • External visitors (e.g., police, nurses, charity representatives) enhance children’s understanding of safety, health and citizenship.

Impact

The impact of our PSHE curriculum is reflected in children’s conduct, wellbeing, relationships and readiness for future learning. By the end of Year 6, pupils:

  • Demonstrate kindness, respect and empathy across the school community.

  • Use a wide emotional vocabulary to articulate their feelings and respond appropriately to others.

  • Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy, applying this knowledge to daily life.

  • Show resilience, independence and confidence when meeting challenges.

  • Recognise risks and know how to keep themselves safe, including online.

  • Value diversity and understand the importance of equality, fairness and inclusion.

  • Form positive friendships and work cooperatively, with strong communication skills.

  • Have developed ageappropriate understanding of economic awareness, responsibilities and contributing to society.

  • Leave Year 6 prepared for secondary school with strong foundations in relationships, health and personal development.

We assess impact through:

  • Pupil voice interviews and discussions.

  • Observations of behaviour, relationships and wellbeing across the school.

  • Class work, floor books, reflection journals or digital evidence.

  • Teacher assessment against a progressive set of PSHE objectives.

  • Monitoring of whole-school behaviour and safeguarding patterns.
