Music
At St Joseph’s Infant School, we use the Kapow Primary Music Scheme to help children feel that they are musical and to nurture a lifelong love of music. Our curriculum is designed to build the skills, knowledge and understanding children need to become confident performers, composers and listeners. Through a wide range of musical experiences, children explore music from different cultures and time periods, learning to respect and appreciate the music of all traditions and communities.
Children develop their musical abilities through singing, playing instruments, improvising, composing and responding to music. These activities also help them build important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, creativity, problem-solving and confidence in presenting and performing. These skills support their development as learners and have a lasting impact beyond the classroom.
Music lessons follow the Kapow scheme and are structured to include performing, listening, composing, music history and the interrelated dimensions of music. This approach captures children’s imagination and encourages them to explore music with enthusiasm. The curriculum follows a spiral model which means children revisit and build on previous learning as they progress. They tackle more complex tasks and deepen their understanding of musical notation history and structure.
Each lesson involves active participation in musical activities drawn from a variety of styles and traditions. Children work independently in pairs and in groups and take part in improvisation and teacher-led performances. Lessons are hands-on and often include movement and dance as well as links to other areas of learning where appropriate.
At St Joseph’s, music is a joyful and inclusive part of school life. We aim to inspire every child to find their musical voice and to carry that love of music with them as they grow.
