PE

Intent

  • Provide a high-quality, broad and active PE education that engages children in physical education through a wide range of physical activity which will enhance life-long fitness and life choices.

  • Provide all pupils with the opportunity to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness, promoting a healthy lifestyle.

  • Our curriculum encourages children to celebrate and appreciate diversity, recognising that everyone brings unique strengths, abilities and perspectives to physical activity.

  • Develop positive attitudes towards physical education which builds resilience and perseverance.

  • Provide opportunities for all children to take part in competitive sport and activities, embedding our school values.

Implementation

To achieve our PE curriculum intent, we deliver a broad, well‑sequenced programme through GetSet4PE that ensures all children experience a wide range of physical activities, sports and movement opportunities. Lessons are carefully structured to develop confidence, motivation and creativity, allowing pupils to explore skills, take risks in a safe environment and express themselves through movement.

We use a progressive skills-based approach, where each unit builds on prior learning to support continuous improvement and competency in physical ability. Teachers model skills explicitly, break learning into manageable steps and provide opportunities for guided practice and independent application. Children regularly revisit key skills—such as balance, coordination, agility and teamwork—through varied activities to deepen understanding and strengthen mastery.

To support high‑quality teaching, all staff receive weekly CPD sessions led by specialist coaches. These sessions focus on developing teachers’ subject knowledge, modelling effective practice and exploring strategies that enhance pupil engagement and progress. Through regular professional learning, teachers deepen their understanding of skill progression and inclusive adaptations. This ongoing support enables staff to confidently tailor activities to meet the diverse needs of their classes, ensuring that every child is appropriately challenged, supported and able to succeed.

Our curriculum actively promotes an appreciation of diversity, using activities and teaching approaches that recognise different abilities, backgrounds and interests. Adaptations, role variations and differentiated challenges ensure that all pupils are included, supported and able to achieve personal success. We celebrate individual strengths and encourage children to value the contributions of others.

To ensure learning is engaging and meaningful, lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies including cooperative games, problem-solving tasks, creative movement and sport-specific skill development. Activities are designed to be enjoyable, purposeful and motivating, encouraging children to participate with enthusiasm and a positive mindset.

The development of resilience is woven throughout the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to persevere with challenges, learn from mistakes and understand that progress often involves effort and determination. Teachers model language that promotes growth mindset and provide opportunities for reflection, goal‑setting and celebrating improvement.

Children also take part in a wide range of competitions, festivals and sporting events, both within school (such as inter-house tournaments and skill challenges) and with other schools in the local community. These experiences help pupils apply their learning in real contexts, develop sportsmanship, and build pride in representing their school. For many children, these events spark long-term interest in physical activity beyond the curriculum.

Through this consistent and inclusive approach, our PE curriculum is implemented in a way that ensures every child can participate, progress and thrive.

Impact

PE is taught as a basis for life-long learning. We believe that a successful PE curriculum where children have access to a range of activities and have a positive, successful experience will then create children who will continue to have a physically active life.

All children are provided with the necessary skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Regular verbal feedback is given within lessons to praise and ensure children apply the correct technique. Feedback also helps children to identify strengths and weaknesses in their own learning as well as their peers. Children develop a wider range of subject-specific vocabulary. Children understand the importance of physical activity, sport and PE, motivating them to become confident, resilient and disciplined. They will also have a good understanding of what a healthy, active life is like and the benefits of leading one.

We aim for all pupils to leave school with the skills to competently swim at least 25m and have the skills to self-rescue in the water, which are key life skills.
