Science

At St Joseph’s Infant School, we use Developing Experts to build a rich and engaging Science curriculum. This scheme is based on a knowledge-rich approach that ensures children not only learn new information but remember it as they move through their learning journey. Each lesson is designed to deliver key facts and knowledge through storytelling, making learning meaningful and memorable for young minds.

Children are introduced to five new keywords in every lesson, with clear explanations that are repeated and reinforced throughout the session. These words help build scientific vocabulary and understanding in a way that feels natural and enjoyable.

Our Science lessons are carefully balanced to include a wide range of working scientifically skills and types of scientific enquiry. This means children get to explore, question, investigate and discuss as they learn, helping them develop a broad set of skills that they can apply across the curriculum.

The Developing Experts scheme provides a clear and progressive structure for each year group, with weekly lesson support that builds knowledge step by step. Lessons include opportunities to understand vocabulary, ask questions, take part in discussions and carry out investigations. Specialist videos from experts and professionals in industry help children make real-world connections between what they learn in the classroom and the careers they might pursue in the future.

Teachers at St Joseph’s adapt each lesson to meet the needs of all pupils, ensuring that every child is included and supported in their learning. Science at our school is about sparking curiosity, building knowledge and helping children see the world through the eyes of a scientist.
